Custom Patios, Walkways & Outdoor Kitchens

Are pavers the right choice for your patio?

There are many different types of paving materials on the market today. Interlocking pavers, asphalt, plain concrete and stamped concrete just to name a few.

patio paversThey all have their advantages and disadvantages.

For example, concrete and stamped concrete very prone to cracking and heaving given the extreme freeze / thaw cycles we experience here in the Lehigh Valley.

But when it comes to affordability, low maintenance, durability, beauty, and style there is only one choice, interlocking paving stones.

When installed properly, interlocking paving stones will not heave, crack, or fade thus offering you a lifetime of outdoor enjoyment.

It's All About The Base

Proper paver base (the compacted stone under the paver) is the #1 key factor in whether a paver patio or walkway will last or FAIL.  Here at TimberRock, we have been installing interlocking paving stones all around the Lehigh Valley for over 14 years. We know that the base is the most important  part of the paving process, getting it right is critical. So we have created a step by step process that ensures that the base is installed correctly for your particular site conditions and soil profile. We believe in our unique base system so much that we even guarantee it, in writing!

History of Pavers

The need for interlocking paving stones on a crushed stone base is very old. The first natural interlocking paver roads were built in 5000 B.C. by the Minoans. The Romans were next and they built the first interstate system with natural segmental paving stones over 2000 years ago.
The first concrete interlocking paving stones were developed in the Netherlands in the late 1940's as a replacement for clay brick streets. In America, interlocking concrete pavers started becoming popular in the 1970's for use in our patios, walkways and driveways.

A lot has changed since then, today almost every culture embraces the use interlocking paving stones because of their beauty, durability, and low maintenance. Weeds have been a continuous problem with pavers throughout history. But now, thanks to technology, weeds have been almost eliminated by the use of polymeric sand.

Choosing the right type of pavers for your patio

Choosing a paver type my seem like a daunting task but here are a few facts to help you make a decision.

Concrete Pavers

Concrete pavers are one of the most durable paver types available. Typically made of compressed aggregate and concrete, paving stones have extremely high compressive strengths ,upwards of 6000 psi.

Paving StoneThis makes them a great choice for driveways, walkways or backyard patios. Pavers are affordable and require very little maintenance, and unlike large areas of plain or stamped concrete, are crack resistant.  In addition, pavers are not slippery when wet, and won't fade over time, this makes them a great choice for paving around a swimming pool or hot tub.

Permeable Pavers

Permeable PaversPermeable pavers are simply concrete pavers that are intentionally spaced or porous so water can drain back down into the ground. Normally small gravel or grass is added to the joints to filter the water.  Permeable pavers are becoming more popular as people try to find ways to lessen the impact of extensive run off that normally occurs with non-permeable surfaces, like asphalt. This unique type of paver is typically used for driveways, parking lots and other areas prone to runoff but is slowly finding its way into use as a paver for patios. Permeable paver manufactures are starting to produce new styles for use in our paver patios and walkways.
Most  municipalities restrict the amount of "Paved" or "Non-permeable" surface you can build on your property based on soil conditions, acreage and water runoff. Permeable pavers, just by their nature, offer the solution to building large patios or driveways on a small properties.

Brick Pavers

The use of brick paving stones for streets and patios goes way back thousands of years.

Brick PaverClay brick pavers are made of molded clay that is super heated in a kiln until they cure. These brick tend to be softer than concrete paving stones and easier to cut. They offer a very unique texture and color, and are often used as an accent to concrete pavers. Many historic American cities like Boston, or Williamsburg  were intentionally designed  with lots brick pavers. Their durability and unique colors made them a perfect choice.

Natural Stone ( Flagstone)

Flagstone Natural Pavers

Mother nature offers a few stones that work well for laying patios and walkways. Bluestone is one of the most popular of the natural stones and it is available in squared sheets or irregular sheets. Squared flagstone will give you a very clean looking finished patio while irregular flagstone will look much more natural.

Flagstone is available in many colors, normally shades of brown or blues, but many exotic colors are available as well. Moss and other creeping plants can be planted in the joints of a flagstone patio or walkway will give the area a much more natural look.

Walkways

Walkways can take on many shapes, colors, and forms. Most newer homes have a boring concrete walkway that connects the driveway to the front door. Here at TimberRock, we want to change the way you see that boring front walkway to your house. We want you to see it as a journey from the driveway to the front door. A front walkway should "flow" with natural curves not just shoot straight to the front door. The introduction of gentle curves into the front walkway will create a more memorable experience for your friends and family when they visit.

Choosing the right type of pavers for your walkway

Paver Walkways

Pavers are a great way to create rustic walkways from one place to another on your property. They are low maintenance, cost effective and stylish. There is no other way to add "old world charm" to you walkway then with the use of pavers. See Paver Walkways

Brick Walkways

Brick have been used for generations as a material for walkways patios and driveways. Readily available and easy to maintain, brick offer a unique texture and color pallet second only to concrete pavers. If you are trying to match into existing brick on your house, then brick could be your best option.

Natural Stone and Flagstone Walkways

If you like your walkways  more natural, then flagstone or gravel are the right materials for you. Unique in color and texture, flagstone and gravel offer a great more natural alternative to pavers or brick. The only drawback to this more natural method of creating walkways is that it take a little more maintenance to keep this type of walkway weed free. Some people like the look of plants between the flagstone so they plant a low creeper like Thyme between the stones to naturalize them even more. We can even sink flagstones down into the sod of your lawn so you can mow right over it and still use it as a natural walkway! Talk about low maintenance!
