Concrete Block and Natural Stone Boulder Retaining Walls
A retaining wall is loosely defined as a structure that holds back dirt or fill on a hillside. Today, there are many ways to accomplish that feat. From natural boulders, to segmental concrete block, the choices are seemingly endless. Below is an explanation of a few options.
Boulder Retaining Walls
Natural boulders are quickly becoming the most popular way to retain dirt in the Lehigh Valley. They are one of the most cost effective and oldest methods available. Standing up to the test of time, boulders can be stacked tight, more open or just plain scattered, there is really no limit to what these natural wonders can do.
In order to ensure the safety of a large boulder wall, we batter their stack back to allow gravity to work for us. If we did not, rest assured, the wall would fail and fall over. We get calls every year to restack failed boulder walls because the original contractor didn't know what he was doing. TimberRock has been stacking boulder walls all over the Lehigh Valley for over 14 years. More Boulder Wall Pictures

Boulders also make great rustic steps! Paired with natural flagstone, boulder steps are a great choice for that natural walkway over a hill.
Retaining Walls for Seating
What better way to add extra seating along a patio than with a seating wall?
Typically under two feet tall, seating walls provide space for overflow seating and a nice visual ending to a patio or walkway. Lighting can be tucked up under the cap of the wall to provide subtle light in the evening when you are entertaining.
